  • Leírás: Scenes on 35mm film from the first modern performance of an ancient Greek tragedy staged in Epidaurus after 2500 years! Sophocles's Electra by the National Theater was directed by Dimitris Rontiris. Katina Paxinou played Electra, Eleni Papadaki Clytenmestra and Thanos Kotsopoulos played Orestes. The costumes were designed by Antonis Fokas. Kleovoulos Klonis, who did the stage designing, made minimal changes to the theatre's natural setting.
    1. OPENING TITLES It is an "Apollon Film" production filmed by A. Meletopoulos. Last Sunday, The Royal Theatre in collaboration with "The Greek Touring Club" organized an excursion to the Epidaurus Ancient Theatre, where Sophocles's tragedy Electra was staged. (1938)
    2. THE INFLUX OF VISITORS INTO THE EPIDAURUS THEATRE The film records the arrival at the ancient theatre of visitors mainly from Athens but also from areas in the vicinity of the ancient theatre. A lot of coaches set their passengers down and park in orderly fashion at an extensive plot of land specially developed into a parking area. Traffic wardens help regulate traffic. Shots taken from various angles show people making their way uphill to the ancient theatre. The theatre is slowly filled to capacity and the film's intertitles provide information about the history of the theatre and the collaborators of the performance. (THE EPIDAURUS THEATRE, 1938)
    3. ALEXIS MINOTIS IS TALKING WITH THE DIRECTOR OF THE ROYAL THEATRE A separate shot of long duration shows actor and director Alexis Minotis – who is not taking part in the play – talking with Kostis Bastias, the Royal Theatre director and head of Letters and Arts of the ministry of Education. The two men are talking, pointing to various locations around the theatre. (THE EPIDAURUS THEATRE, 1938)
    4. JUST BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE There are shots of celebrities and public figures at the first rows of seats in the theatre. A few minutes before the performance and before sunset, Royal Theatre personnel manager Miltiadis Lidorikis prologues the performance. (THE EPIDAURUS THEATRE, 1938)
    5. SCENES FROM THE PERFORMANCE There are shots of the staging of "Electra". These are masterly executed shots from various vantage points of the theatre. A long shot – mainly from above and also close-up shots give viewers the chance to take a closer look at the protagonists. The film comes to a rather abrupt conclusion, missing out the end of the performance and the actors taking a bow to the audience. (THE EPIDAURUS THEATRE, 1938)
